Submitted by Animal Place Sanctuary
We’re not sure what exactly Gilbert (left), Laura (middle) and Charlene (pygmy) are talking about, but it seems to have brought a smile to Laura’s face!
Gilbert and Laura both come from horrible cases of cruelty - Gilbert was hog-tied and nearly slaughtered, while Laura was being dragged around at auction by [...]
Meat with No Feet!?
Submitted by Creature Talk
A while back PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) offered $1 million to any company or person who could come up with a cost effective way to produce cloned meat on a large scale, the goal being that people could still satisfy their meat cravings, but that animals wouldn’t have [...]
On Breed Discrimination, Bestiality and Pound Seizure
Submitted by Animal Person
Florida law bans breed discrimination, with the exception of Miami-Dade County, which has a ban on pitt bull-type dogs. However, bills have been introduced that would allow local governments to ban the possession of Pit bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds and other breeds.
The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida says:
You Can Help
1. Contact Rep. [...]
Colorado Votes Against Re-opening Dog Track
Submitted by Animal Person
I didn’t know about this until it was over, and thank heavens it all turned out okay, but greyhound racing came close to being revived in Colorado. Mile High Greyhound Park was almost given a window of opportunity to reopen.
Thankfully, Charmaine Settle, a Grey2K USA board member, sprang into action. According to [...]

This Saturday, from 10a to 11a, tune in to WZBC 90.3 if you’re interested in hearing an interview with me regarding the connection between animal rights and veganism, as well as my organization, the Boston Vegan Association. I will appear in-studio with the host of “Expanding Awareness,” Victor Venckus. WZBC [...]
Vegan Lasagna: Like Your Mom’s, But Cruelty Free!
Submitted by Creature Talk
I typically don’t make up recipes. I have gotten to be a pretty good little chef, if I do say so myself, but I almost always use someone else’s recipe and follow it mighty closely too. But do you know what I’ve been missing lately? Lasagna. I wanted a good old-fashioned lasagna [...]
Hospitals Take Animals Off Menus to Cut Carbon
Submitted by Animal Person
Across the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, hospitals have a plan to cut their global warming emissions that includes curbing meat and dairy use (among a slew of other strategies), according to yesterday’s Guardian. (Here’s the article, and thanks to Bill for the tip. And how about the photo of [...]
Sustainability: Same Idea, Different Name
Submitted by Animal Person
“A fork confronts us in the path to a sustainable global civilization: a choice either to continue domination and exploitation in a green guise, or to adopt a new ethic that recognizes all sentient beings as members of the moral community” (Animal Rights, Human Needs, 2).
Angus Taylor takes on environmentalists as well [...]
Sustainability Isn’t About You
Submitted by Animal Person
Natasha over at the Sustainable Food blog of Change.org has posted “Meat that can save the climate,” to which I inadvertently double-commented on.
This topic is important to me because I spent at least a couple of years telling people that if they were going to eat animals, they should purchase their animal [...]
Irish SPCA’s Bizarre Fundraiser
Submitted by Animal Person
I don’t know of any SPCA that has a mission I’d give money to, and not because I don’t care about animals, but because I believe I care more than they do. And that’s not me being arrogant and self-righteous. It’s a simple statement of fact that if I had an organization [...]
Animal Spotlight: Virginia & Lenny
Submitted by Animal Place Sanctuary
It was hard to pick just one of these photos, so here are all three. They look like sheep with a message across the ages, maybe one of hope or kindness. Probably “more apples, please”.
Virginia and Lenny are two special sheep. Virginia was rescued from a live-market slaughterhouse. She arrived skinny [...]
On Class B Dealers and Being Judgmental
Submitted by Animal Person
First, and especially if you live in Michigan (and please forward to anyone who does), tell everyone to contact Montcalm County Commissioners regarding not renewing its contract with R&R Research.
Montcalm County has forged a deal with the devil to alleviate the expenses associated with the euthanasia and dump fees from its animal [...]
Should States Fund Zoos and Aquariums?
Submitted by Animal Person
Before you say you’re sure about how you feel about this issue, watch the video made by the Wildlife Conservation Society which is the first item on the left column/bar.
This is sort of an unfair juxtaposition of question and video, as I don’t think states should fund zoos and aquariums, period. But [...]
Our Daily Bread finally available on DVD
Submitted by An Animal Friendly Life
In my VegNews Magazine review of Our Daily Bread a while back, I called it “an unflinching depiction of the of widely-used, little-known practices formulated by modern agricultural businesses in response to our unceasing demand for plentiful, inexpensive food.”
The word “unflinching” still resonates with me. This movie literally does not [...]

I’m Daryl Hannah, and Other Good News
Submitted by Animal Person
Bea wanted some good news today, and here it is: I’m Daryl Hannah. That’s good news for me, and your good news is that maybe you’re Woody Harrelson or Paul Watson.
This is all according to “What’s Your Green Personality?” at TheDailyGreen, which is a minute-long quiz that has a space for comments [...]
Dogs are an Elephant’s Best Friend…?
Submitted by Creature Talk
This is probably one of the cutest stories about animals I’ve seen in a while, and what animal advocate couldn’t use a good pick-me-up every now and then, right??
It is a story about a very unlikely couple: Tarra the elephant and Bella the dog. They found each other at Elephant Sanctuary in [...]
“I’m Vegan” interviews at Animal Voices and VegNews.com
Submitted by An Animal Friendly Life
As “casting” for I’m Vegan starts to wrap up, news about the project is likely to come more frequently, though I don’t plan to post too many updates for I’m Vegan here. Work is underway on the production version of the official website, which will include its own blog. I [...]
On air cruelty & UN climate expert promotes eating less meat
Submitted by Animal Place Sanctuary
Pattrice over at Eastern Shore Sanctuary’s blog writes about how a San Francisco based radio station, LIVE 105, is planning on chasing several chickens on-air on Inauguration day (tomorrow).
How you can help:
There is, of course, one more cause for concern about this particular event. Why, on the day that our nation’s [...]
ZenHabits on Compassion Toward Animals
Submitted by Animal Person
Thanks to Bill for pointing out that Leo at ZenHabits wrote “On Compassion Towards Animals” today. This is a great opportunity to inject some important, overlooked concepts or point out misconceptions. Leo has a huge following and has written a lot of wonderful posts, but there are definitely problems with today’s message, [...]
Chocolate pudding, plus bonus food pr0n!
Submitted by An Animal Friendly Life
I get the late-night munchies like anyone else (and I have a notorious sweet tooth), but I don’t often have something in the fridge or cupboards that really calls out to me, so I end up prowling the kitchen, unsatisfied. Well, tonight some silken tofu I had bought for just [...]
“The hardest part of the slaughter was the betrayal.”
Submitted by Animal Person
You probably know about the new trend of chefs killing the animals they will cook, or at least getting to know them before they are slaughtered, or in the cases of Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, actually have episodes of their television shows dedicated to educating the audience about the lives and [...]
If Cass Sunstein is a Radical Animal Rights Activist, What Am I?
Submitted by Animal Person
You’d think that people who spend so much time vilifying a cause would know what it is. The Center for Consumer Freedom is at it again, calling Cass Sunstein a “radical animal rights activist.”
Now, from what I’ve read and heard, Sunstein has some important ideas and communicates them very effectively . . [...]
Animal Rights 101, part six: New Welfarism
Submitted by An Animal Friendly Life
Introduction
In order to respect the basic moral rights of nonhuman animals, we must abolish their use. Once we’ve done this in our own lives by becoming vegan, we are left with the question of how to abolish the use of animals in society at large. Given that the use of [...]
On Learning From “Eating Animals”
Submitted by Animal Person
Did you see the mayhem over at Change.org’s Sustainable Food page with Natasha Chart’s “Eating Animals?”
I’m writing about it because I’d like to learn any lesson I can to prevent parts of it from happening again (you know, the parts that happen all the time and will probably continue to). There has [...]
