Puppy Mill Horrors in Wisconsin
Submitted by For The Love of the Dog
I absolutely hate puppy mills!! And I hate the people who run them! I’m not going to mince words here. What they do to those dogs and puppies is nothing but torture and abuse, let’s not candy coat it!
Being a Wisconsinite, the growing puppy mill problem here sickens me. I came across a story today that gives you an idea of what I’m talking about. Read on if you have the stomach for it.
This is from TMJ4
An exclusive I Team investigation has discovered sick, injured puppies being raised in Wisconsin puppy mills.
Senior Investigative reporter John Mercure and the I Team headed to Central Wisconsin and inside some of the nation’s worst puppy mills. Mercure discovered puppies being raised in wire cages and wading through their own waste.
Wisconsin has become one of the top locations for puppy mills. And experts say the horrid conditions inside the mills are just getting worse and worse.
Our hidden cameras captured a black market for underage puppies.
Central Wisconsin is big farming country. Wheat, and corn are cash crops here. So are puppies.
We recently visited the Tammy Kautzer farm in Clark County. Humane Society officials say it is one of the most notorious puppy mills in the state.
We decided to buy a puppy at the Kautzer farm. Tammy Kautzer let us onto the property and our hidden cameras captured dogs crowded into wire pens inside the barn. They were on cold concrete floors covered in feces. In one pen there was even a dead puppy. There were so many dogs that it was almost deafening. All of them were yelping for something they seldom get, a human touch, a little personal attention.
Chuck Wegener works for the Clark County Humane society. “They don’t know what sunshine is. They’ve never felt grass. They’ve never been held or loved. It’s tough,” Wegener told us.
The barn was bad. Inside the Kautzer house was just strange. There were dozens of dogs stacked in cages. Kautzer admitted to us that many of them had staph infections. And the sick dogs shared the floor with the Kautzer kids. In one corner we saw a dog that had half of it’s skin torn away by another dog in the barn. Our experts said the dog should have been euthanized.
We decided to buy a Pomeranian puppy from Kautzer. She sold it to us even though the puppy was only four weeks old. That’s half the recommended age. “Any good breeder is going to say minimum, absolute minimum is eight weeks,” Wegener told us.
We named the puppy Angelica. We got her outside and we were shocked by how sick she was. There was fur missing. Angelica had a major staph infection with open sores. And her tail had been chewed away. It didn’t even look like a tail. Angelica also had parasites.
We headed back in to ask Kautzer about the sick puppy she sold us. She denied that the dog was sick, despite the fact that she wrote, ‘known illness’ on our receipt. She also gave us antibiotics to take home for our ‘healthy dog’. When we confronted her, Kautzer told us, “It’s eating on it’s own. It’s fine.” She went on to tell us, “It’s not sick. It’s healing.” And when we pressed her on questions about her receipt and the drugs she gave us, Kautzer ducked into her house.
We bought our dog for $300 cash. And experts tell us that Kautzer sold 400 dogs last year. That’s $120,000 she may have made. Terri Woodcock helped rescue Angelica. “These people don’t care about the dogs. If they cared about the dogs they would have them into the vet and get the proper care and not sell them at four weeks old.”
Vets think Angelica is going to be ok.
Right now she is going through extensive medical treatment.
Experts say part of the problem is that the Wisconsin legislature has not passed any legislation to protect little dogs like Angelica. Bills have been proposed recently. But none have yet come up for a vote.
Take a moment to visit TMJ4 and view the video there to see the puppy mill, the puppy miller and more. It’s not pleasant or pretty but people need to know!

Another “puppy mill” that I have witnessed NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO; SCHOMBERG KENNELS in La Crosse, WI.
I was told that I purchased a male Rottie for $1,500.00 and he was pick of the litter. Tom and Nancy Schomberg assured us that the pup was between 8 & 9wks old. I beg to differ, he was older. They had and still have so many dogs crowded into an unheated dark barn, which many dogs are on only cement floors while they walk and eat their own feces!! At 5 months I had to give my puppy back because of severe temperment problems which resulted into many stiches from him attacking me. I was PROMISED my money back and that was aprox. in 5 or so months ago.
Ive seen Tom the owner actually abuse and use wickedly inhumane force on the puppy I brought back and was called a Pus$y, that I wasnt strong enough to handle such a strong willed dog. (Ive had 3 in the past which lived happy lives till the day old age put them to rest)
I need help re; SCHOMBERG KENNELS & put their puppy mill to a STOP!!! THANK YOU!

As a breeder it is difficult to hear about those that try to profit from the mass sales of puppies. It also indirectly gives a bad name to those of us that sacrifice so much to ensure we are breeding the highest quality animals and providing the utmost in care for our beloved pets. Please don’t lump all breeders into the same group. As with anything, it is the fringe outliers that make the news, not the many that are responsible.

My husband and I bought a puppy from the Schomberg Kennel three years ago, we paid 750.00 dollars for her. She is a beautiful dog and we take her to the vet regularly, she is in execellent health and about to have her first litter. We have a whole family history on her and we were given a book with the history of the kennel and the dogs they started with. I suppose we were the lucky ones. I do recall the dark damp barn and the unclean kennels. Are you telling us this is all a scam? I believe what you say and they should be shut down. We now feel like we rescued our baby from the hands of these awful people please continue on with your work and you may e-mail me to let me know what is going on. Thank you so much. We just recommended to some friends that they should go and see the puppies and perhaps buy one. I just happened across the article about the puppy mill part of it. I had to call our friends and tell them to look elsewhere.

Not all breeders who sell puppies are bad. I am an ethical and moral breeder of Rottweilers, I show my own dogs, I train my own dogs, I do the genetic tests for the down fall in my breed which is the eyes, hearts, hips. and I guarantee my dogs with a 2 yr. genetic guarantee!! We only breed Quality lines!! I very much prefer German and european lines.
First off, it is very sad about these puppy mills, It makes me sick because I love my dogs and they are apart of my family and my families who buy!! But it blows me away on the “DEALS” people seem to want!! And how they do not do there home work on the breed or breeder they are shelling their money out too!! It is only we the people that can change such things if YOU want. I have had people want a $500.00 or a bit more or less and no guarantee. no OFA or OVC done. just Champion bloodlines. big deal who are they and where are the champions, way in the back of the pedigree as they bred whatever crap up to the front of the pedigree!? I get people who tell me, “we just want a pet, we don’t care about the hips”…. I tell them you should if you want your pet to walk and you don’t want a $3,000.00 hip replacement done!!! and then they are like, “oh?”.
I get some people who do not even ask me about me, or what I breed. how long I have been breeding.( 14 yrs. now I have! and only rottweilers) go and see how the parents are kept and fed. Are they in big pens, is there lots of food and water? what do the people do with them? How do they promote the breed? where did they get their dogs? did they get them from the news paper another junk or mom/pop, hobby breeder?! probably!!!! did they do there genetic testing? there is a reason this breed as issues and every breed, because people do not care and throw whatever together. Or people who just think they are gonna safe a puppy from a bad breeder………YOU the buyer, just supported that piece of crap junk breeder!!!…YOU gave him money and as long as he is getting money from nice poeple or cheap/deal people he will breed that poor bitch back again and again and again and then dump her out, when she is of no use!!!
YOU are building them!!! how about leaving and calling the humane society and ride them to make sure they went out there and followed up and are taking action!!! are you worried the crap breeder may know it’s you? who cares!! he is a piece of crap! what do you care about them!? and the humane society doesn’t give out names!! so people instead of buying the 1st dog you see or buying a cute pup, as the parents are treated like crap or just in cages to be bred cont. how about supporting a QUality breeder who cares to get you a great dog, a guarantee, and bettering the breed. and pay your x-tra $400.00 and get a hell of better dog and save your money long term, because you have an all around healthy dog!!!!
if you can’t afford it save up!!!! you see a good litter, put your money down on it!!! do your home work. if your breeder can’t answer your quetions oor let you see the dogs, or they get short with you on the phone or say they have to go, then RUN AWAY!!!!!! Take your money and find a breeder who does!! and I will tell you a good ethical and moral breeder, who does the genetics are hard to find!!!!!
thank you.

Going to the SCHOMBERG KENNELS in La Crosse, WI from Milwaukee today. Been reading about them since we had a beautiful wonderful tempered Rotti for ten years prior to now..[old age] family of 5 kids in the teens and a cat & med dog present in the home now.. Everyone understands the Potential nature of a rott here and if we get another I’m prepared to do the required work to put it in to its “place” in this little pack of folks that is my family … I only had to “secure” that thought once in our previous Rotti’s mind once and it NEVER came up again…you should be able to tell early on if there’s temperament problems.. I’ll be showing the schombergs the various articles I’ve collected and anxiously awaiting their reactions…

I think the comment on Schomberg was quite harsh, if you know anything about dogs natural environment, you will find that well lit supper warm dens is not the norm. I am one that thinks puppy mills should be banned but Schomberg Kennels in LaCrosse is No Puppy mill. Thats just silly. I’ve been there before and the area for the puppies was very human reasonably clean and with there healthy well fed mothers. To want it to be a health spa is just a little over the top. Nancy is a nice and knowledgeable person and has been breeding for 20years. The males had spacious seperate kennels and a door where they could go
inside a personal den if it rained. THATS NOT A PUPPY MILL. I think Kellie you just had a bad experience with a puppy and freaked out.! Puppies dont attack. They bite their litter mates to PLAY
and establish pack rank. I’ve never heard of a 8-12week old PUPPY “attack”. They bite. THATS NORMAL! If you are a week leader (typical dog lover) who blames the dog instead of what YOU DID
We tend to OVER humanize dogs and thats why there usually happier when there in their natural state in packs and not in some man made sweater with a silly hat on there heads to make their sick owners happy. Educate yourself about dogs before you blame the dog or the breed.

The Schombergs from SCHOMBERG KENNELS in LA CROSSE, WI have retained an attorney from Hale,Skemp, Hanson, Skemp & Sleik demanding that I “immediately have that entry removed from the blog” meaning the very true as to what I saw with my own eyes and experiences! The attorneys letter also states that “Failure to do so by June 15, 2009 will be evidence of your intent to continue to defame my clients which will result in further action.”
On another note, I am NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO FEELS THE SAME WAY ABOUT THE SCHOMBERG KENNELS. Funny though, Tom and Nancy Schomberg can spend money on Attorneys BUT couldn’t pay me the $1500.00 for a returned male rottie whos temperament caused scars, stitches and hospital bills. Defame, I am not… It is only the truth of what I saw and experienced while dealing with Schomberg Kennels.
Feel free to contact me if anyone has any questions or concerns re; this matter. Isn’t it my Admn. right to speak freely as to how I feel and witnessed?!?!? This is America, right?!?!?

Does anyone have any information about:
Debbie & Joe Paulina (AKA J&D’s Pups)
1859 Eagle Ct
Friendship, WI 53934
Some one I know recently purchased a puppy from this place (online) and were sent home with a VERY sick puppy…parvo virus, hook worms and coccidia! The pup is now hospitalized (well over $300 in bills so far) and the vet is horrified that this puppy was sold to anyone with all its illnesses. I’d appreciate any information regarding this particular breeder and/or how to report this to the authorities. By the way, the breeder insisted on CASH ONLY and no refunds…a huge red flag right there!

My attorney and I were doing a bit of “investigating” into my defense re; Tom and Nancy at SCHOMBERG KENNELS located in LA CROSSE, WI, town of BARRE and what we found was not only disturbing but so close to the truth. I wish I only discovered the site a LONG time ago. The site is called ROTTWEILER.NET. Sign yourself in and then do a search (upper right hand corner) of SCHOMBERG KENNELS. Wait until you see how many poor and disturbing posts from breeders even years ago and most of these breeders are from out of state! What boggles my mind is, the Schombergs are wanting me to RECANT or PULL my honest and true blog statements or I will have legal problems re; defaming the Schombergs. But what about all the posts on ROTTWEILER.NET?!?!?! Why are the SCHOMBERGS picking on me? Why didn’t they go after the MANY posters on Rottweiler.net?
I know what I saw, witnessed and ended up with a very vicious, bad tempered male rottie. I also have scars to PROVE IT!
I want the SCHOMBERGS to realize what they did and gave me was WRONG!! What I did post wasn’t even half of what I experienced and saw.
Tom and Nancy were “robbed” of 2 puppy rotts by 2 men that wrote a bad check for them. This happend aprox. a week or 2 from when I picked up my “Gunthur”. Nancy whined and cried about the situation and asked me to drive by their homes located in Kenosha and Milwaukee. If I did see the puppies she then told me to grab them if they were out and about. Nancy will probably lie and deny this fact, but I had and still have, in Nancys handwriting, the names of both men and both of their addresses along with their phone numbers. Hmmmmmm, I wonder if Nancy had her atty. contact these two theives who wrote a bad check which I thought was a felony after a certain large amount written for…
I know the Schombergs will be reading this, so, my request to Tom and Nancy is; STOP THE LIES, STOP THE GAMES AND GIVE ME MY FULL $1,500.00 BACK TO ME. THATS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO. I will not accept half amounts or portions of what I paid you. The check you sent me for only a portion of what I paid you is still at my Attorneys office - UNCASHED!! Just give me what is mine - the full amount I paid for a bad tempered puppy. Nancy verbally said I could return the puppy for ANY reason during the first year, just as one man did because his female rottie would not stop barking!! I feel so bad and at times cry at what you people are doing at SCHOMBERG KENNELS, over breeding and inbreeding which results in some bad results in your puppies! Those puppies are NOT to blame, you are the ones producing such bad batches of Rottweiler puppies. And who has to suffer for your greedy ways…? Those innocent puppies and those who surcumb to your manipulating ways, the buyers who think they are getting a decent, well socialized puppy who we think have seen the sun and green grass, etc. I could go on and on, but this situation ANGERS ME SO!
SCHOMBERGS; DO WHAT IS RIGHT, PAY ME MY MONEY AND STOP OVER AND INBREEDING!!!!!
**** AND THANK YOU KINDLY TO ALL WHO HAVE EMAILED OR CALLED ME WITH YOUR SUPPORT RE; THIS SITUATION. I APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT AND SIMILAR SITUATIONS RE; THE SCHOMBERGS! *****
REMEMBER, GOTO: ROTTWEILER.NET and SEARCH SCHOMBERG KENNELS, OR TOM AND OR NANCY SCHOMBERG.
THANK YOU,
Kellie Coleman

I don’t believe the Schombergs being this “cruel” as you’re publishing. I bought a dog from them years back, their facility was wonderful, they were polite, and my dog is the best I could ever ask for. It sounds like you’re being the cruel one at this point. How can you blame the breeder if YOUR dog bit YOU?

My boyfriend and I purchased a 7 wk. old male rottweiler from the Schombergs about 2 months ago and we couldn’t have been happier. It upsets me to hear them portrayed like this because our experience with them was nothing like that. The circumstances for the dogs was not anything out of the norm, and I actually thought the barn was very clean and spacious for the rotties. There is plenty of beautiful land for them to run on and overall I thought they seemed like very happy dogs. We got to meet both the mom, dad and grandpa of our puppy Sebastian and were very pleased with what we saw. YES our puppy bites us, YES I have scars to prove it too, but that is what comes with buying a dominant dog, especially a male. We couldn’t have asked for a better dog though. We show him that we’re the boss when he does bite us, and he is quickly learning where he fits in with our pack. I don’t believe that anyone should be blaming these breeders for puppys just trying to fit into THEIR pack.
WE LOVE OUR DOG THAT WE GOT FROM SCHOMBERG KENNEL!

I purchased a female from schombergs 4 yrs ago and i agree with this Kelli lady. My wife and i had nothing but problems with temperment and attacking at a young age also. We did spend thousands on personal trainers to get a grip on her. She has bitten 4 people, one real bad, thank god they were relatives who did not persue.
As for conditions of their property, yes i feel they over bred and the barn was a dirty, dark stinky place with just cement floors that were covered with feces. A LOT!
I remember the barn to be in “ruins” meaning there was a lot of work to be done and tom was doing it himself. Aftyer almost 4+ YRs im sure the schombergs must have the place looking and in better working conditions. Hopefully!
Dont be so hype to discredit the ladies with the “bad egg” puppy they bought. NOT EVERY PUPPY IS A GOOD ONE OR TURNS OUT TO BE A GOOD DOG. Didnt kelly ab ove mention that this puppy from schombergs was her 4th one? So how can you jason and Wendy even try to comment on whaty she experienced with that male puppy when YOU were not there? WERE YOU THERE DURING THEIR MEETINGS OR CONVERSATIONS EITHER? OK then… 4th rott for her and this is the only rott she had major problems with from the start? Didnt she mention stitches? NOW THAT IS NOT NORMAL BITING BEHAVIOR FOR ANY PUPPY OR AT 6MO OF AGE OR SO!!!!
Whatever her case may be I highly doubt someone would lie about conditions or actions of a puppy esp. after their extensive experiences! Sure Schombergs were nice to me. Why wouldnt they be? I had cash that was going into their hands! If someone was going to give me a grand or more, id be nice as heck to them too!
Im seeking another rott at this time but WITH ANOTHER BREEDER and every breeder ive talked to had nothing good to say about the way schombergs breed or should i say in breed or socialize, I mean dont socialize their rotts.
And yeah go to the site she mentioned and read up on schomberg kennels. the one mentioned above; ROTTWEILER.NET and in the search section enter the kennel name (or any other one you want to read up on) or nancy and toms name.
I think that kelli with the bad egg was in fact true and i also think that the Schombergs have either had friends or even themselves post negitive comments against her. I wouldnt put it past them, I did catch Nancy in a few “fibs” but it didnt hamper me from buying my puppy since it wasnt regarding anything to do with our business aspect. Just lies about OTHER issues. Do your homework first THEN pick out your rott. Just because you drive such a long distance to Schom bergs and dont want to come back or wait, dont just pick out a puppy from their farm. Expand and go and talk to others. Do your homework. To this day I have to watch my rott from Schombergs and muzzle her. She bit and gave stitches to a relative who got the worst “attack” out of all her bites. She wasover 2 and a half yrs old. I love her to death and would never give her up, but now I dont take any chances. Take care! Matthew D.

I just had to put down my Rottie, Jetta at 10 years of age. He was purchased from Schomberg Kennels at 8 weeks of age on July 1st, 1999. He was the dominent pup in the litter and turned out to be the very best dog I have ever had. I have shown and trained dogs for years and have been to a variety of Kennels and Boarding facilities. Some Rottweilers are head strong as pups and require extra guidance. Jetta was like this but after 6-9 months of socialization and CONTINUIED reinforcement throughout his life I had no issues, ever, with him. While showing I specialized in Rotts and Labs. Rotts tended to be more standoffish and bullheaded. The reward for extra work in the beginning is impossible to overstate with this breed. His health was a+ until the end.
As to the facilities. I went down their to touch base with Nancy and Tom 9-11-09 as it’s been a few months and I am ready for another Rottweiler. The facilities were as expected, puppies in the barn on straw beds with Mom or just weened, breeding males in the runs and females and younger males in the large runs. All the dogs looked healthy, and to the last one had a great reaction to me and Nancy as she showed me each one and told me their story. Hardley a bark and no agressive behavior at all. 2 of the males were more standoffish but that is to be expected as per the AKC breed standard and they let me pet them and gave me the Rottweiler kisses I am missing (read licking my hand)before stepping back and watching me a little. This was probably due to the fact I am a big guy and Nancy is clearly their mom ( and a smaller lady). Jetta protected my girlfriend instinctivly. Nancy took 2 hrs with me, got some of the 1000+ Jetta pics I have, and gave me a very proffesional brochure. The dogs, pups, and bitches were well socialized. I’ve been around a lot of less social dogs in my time. The pens weren’t spotless but were very clean. Dogs poop and their is no way to instantly pick it up and litter of 8+ puppies poop a lot on a short period of time. As for heating in the barn, These are Rottweilers. The come from a region in Germany that is COLD and the facilities are more then adaquate to protect all dogs on the premisis. The dogs are also OFA’d before breeding. Anyone who knows dog breeding knw the line breding is common. This is not inbreeding by any stretch and this is not a puppy mill. I’ve seen one in real life and there is no mistaking it. I’m sorry someone had such a horrible experiance but I can tell you mine was the opposite. Nancy and Tom were great this time and the first, I was provided with a pedigree (to 4 generations deep) and OFA records on request on all current sires and dams. I am not blaming the owners who have trouble with their Rotts. I laso would submit that it not the breeders fault. Any reputable breeder as well as most good Rottweiler books will tell you that this is not a breed for everyone or someone in a first dog situation. Every single dog, pup, or bitch was friendly to me
and exhibited correct Rottweiler behavior. I have alot of dog experiance as well as Rottweiler experiance and can say this is not a puppy mill, they are not breeding indiscriminatly, and the dogs are healthy and well socialized. I hope to be getting one soon from Schomberg.
p.s. Negative posts are all that show up on the internet. How many positive experiances happen every day and aren’t written about?

Over the last 15 years I have puchased 3 Rotts from the Schombergs. My 1st was a pick large female and bueatiful, I was happy to pay any price for her, she was healthy and conditions were great, they have a good set up and Nancy had all the puppies from 2 different litters outside sunning in the grass when i got there, we were there for 4 hours as she let us play with all of the pups and meet all the adults we had a great day, Baron stayed close to the house but did wander over to see all the puppies and he was their pride and joy, he was awsome, large, and temper was bueatiful, for me being a stranger he was so gentle. We took our pup home she was stubborn but normal for Rotts I spent alot of time with her and she was a perfect part of our Family untill she passed of age..We new it was coming so we went online looked for another to help the heartache of losing her, online we saw Breeders that claimed pure German and you can see they werent, most of the parents looked awful, i was looking for short, stocky, bullhead, thick, couple breeders who had what I wanted were priced 2000, 3000 and up, I cant afford that, then I got my paperwork out for my baby, and hoping that the Schombergs still breed, I called and to my happiness they did, I was there the next afternoon and same setup, same tour with Nancy and Tom, and same Gentle Giants, I bought a male without hesitating….. and again healthy… he was stubborn and bit wild and played hard but I was to gentle with him and Id give him his way, way to much, so it was me that made him a bit sassy and spoiled, but my son latched on to him and spent every minute possible with him and took him everywhere, whether fishing, hunting, or a drivein, but my son did fix his wild streek, my son had the sternness he needed, I was lonely without him since I gave him to my son,I visit alot but not the same, so I again seached the internet and found zip that caught my eye, so I called Schombergs again, and they are still there, long time they been there and breeding, that dedication is wonderful to see, and again I went there and same barn, same runs, same gentle giants, new Rotts on site as their Family has grown and changed losing their love Baron and others…. and all the Rotts were Gentle and knew Nancy, their mom, and friendly, it was a snow storm so we played in the barn a bit then took couple females into the house to play, couple hours later and after a pot of coffee i again bought another perfect Rott from the Schhombergs.. Tom and Nancy have a great set up and over 20 yrs of breeding they have a great Kennel, they are experienced, and they spend time and effort with all their Rotts, you can tell when you see them react to Nancy and Tom and Strangers, The Kennels are nice, and the Barn is a fine setup, alot of hay all over for the Rotts and puppies, being their in a snow storm, and being in the barn for over a hour, it was not that bad for coldness, and Nancy and Tom clean the barn it was not filthy like that nasty KELLIE COLEMAN said, it never was any of the times me and my Family were out there, I think that this Coleman person is a liar, and a cheat, if you cant take care of a stubborn Rott I hope you dont have any Children, what are you going to do with a wildchild??? are you going to harrasse the hospital to pay you back the bill cause the kids a pain in the ass, or do you harrasse the Father for money for the kid, or force him to take the kid… I bet you have alot of issues…my 1st guess is Financial… you dont get your money back, if the Rott isnt what you expected then sell him to someone who will spend the quality time and give the love and patients it needs, and learn your lesson, you are not cut out for a Pet. As for the Schombergs, I love your dedication and many many years doing what you do, my bueatiful baby is 5 now and we have decited to purchase another Rott from the Schombergs.. So Nancy and Tom Im coming again…. For xxmas our home will have another member of our Family… Thankyou for your German perfections…..
